Orders issued to and from Capt. Orville W. Leonard as commander of a detachment of Cos. C and H of the Mass. 42nd Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. The detachment was stationed primarily at Camp Parapet in the New Orleans area from fall 1862-63. The orders were issued to Leonard at the general, brigade, and regimental level by Col. Isaac S. Burrell and by Leonard at the detachment level. They pertain to daily officers, drills, and routines, as well as the treatment of Blacks from local plantations as workers and the formation of the 1st Louisiana Engineers largely commanded by men from the 42nd.
